Detained for intelligence operations and ties to the foreign terrorist organisation, 'Donetsk People's Republic (DPRK)'
In a significant development, the Federal Prosecutor's Office in Germany announced the arrest of two individuals, Dieter S. and Alexander J., on April 9 and 11, 2024, respectively. The arrests were made in Bayreuth and Karlsruhe following an extensive investigation.
Dieter S. is suspected of having been active as a fighter in the so-called "Strelkov group," led by Igor Girkin, between December 2014 and September 2016 in eastern Ukraine. This group, financed and directed by Kremlin-affiliated actors, crossed from Russia into Ukraine in April 2014 and was involved in armed conflict in the Donetsk region.
The investigation reveals that Dieter S. is also suspected of membership in a foreign terrorist organization and the preparation of a serious act of violence endangering the state. The conversations involved discussions of possible sabotage actions in the Federal Republic of Germany, with Dieter S. personally scouting some of the targeted objects, taking photos and videos.
The aim was to undermine the military support provided by Germany to Ukraine against the Russian invasion. Dieter S. is accused of espionage for the purpose of sabotage, creating security-threatening images of military facilities, and conspiring to cause an explosion using explosives and arson.
He is strongly suspected of having been active for a foreign intelligence service in a particularly serious case. Dieter S. has been in contact with a person linked to a Russian intelligence agency since at least October 2023. He sent this information, including images of military transports and equipment, to his contact.
Alexander J. is accused of assisting Dieter S. at least from March 2024. The residences and workplaces of the suspects were searched with the support of the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office. The arrest warrants for Dieter S. were issued on April 9, 2024, with the order for pretrial detention.
Dieter S. was presented to the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice on April 17, 2024, and Alexander J.'s appearance before the same court will take place on April 18, 2024. The investigation is ongoing, shedding light on alleged activities that pose a significant threat to Germany's national security.
