Developing KOTAverse in honor of KOTA's 10-year milestone

In 2023, creative digital agency KOTA, founded by James Piper ten years ago, celebrated a significant milestone with an updated website and a standalone project called the KOTAverse. This collaborative effort, led by the design team consisting of Matt, Margo, Nicola, and James Piper, aimed to provide an innovative and immersive experience for its community.

To develop the KOTAverse website, the team enlisted the expertise of Cyd Stumpel, a creative Web Developer based in the Netherlands. The concept for the KOTAverse was inspired by the Blob Mixer, an interactive WebGL component, and Stumpel's impressive portfolio.

The KOTAverse offers an interactive journey through history, featuring a dynamic visual timeline and events orbiting around a central blob. Greensock's GSAP library was utilised to add similar easings to the (dis)appearance of elements in the KOTAverse, ensuring a seamless and engaging user experience. Lenis was employed for virtual scrolling, making the scroll feel smoother.

Each event on the timeline can be clicked on, inviting users to delve deeper and explore more about each significant moment. The cards shown when you "Go deeper" in the KOTAverse were created using 'plain' CSS 3D animations. Interactive elements in the KOTAverse are calculated if the mouse is overlaying a certain pixel.

The team currently consists of 15 talented individuals, each contributing to the KOTAverse's success. The timeline in the KOTAverse was built using Three.js, a powerful 3D graphics library.

For the 'Who We Are Now' section, the team decided to represent the five content types as 'elements' with the fifth element, Our team, being the most important. Each element is represented by a 3D shape using the KOTA brand colours.

Nicola suggested the name KOTAverse for the project, reflecting its standalone and highly interactive nature. The KOTAverse is intended to be a standalone microsite, highly interactive, using cutting-edge web technology, and featuring a big and bold design.

In addition to the KOTAverse, the agency also designed websites for DK&A and PixelArtworks in 2023. The KOTAverse is now live and available for the community to explore, offering a unique and captivating way to learn about the agency's history and current projects.
