Digital bank account acceleration and reduced identity fraudiness: Is electronic identity adoption imminent in Switzerland?
The Swiss population will soon be presented with an important decision on September 28, 2025 – the introduction of a state-recognized digital ID, or e-ID. This innovative solution, aimed at simplifying various aspects of daily life for citizens and businesses, has garnered support from numerous quarters, including Ergon Informatik and Gabriela Keller, CEO of the same company and a member of the political party "Die Mitte" (The Center).
The e-ID is poised to set significant milestones in digital processes for the new generations. Gabriela Keller emphasises the gain in control and privacy offered by the e-ID, stating that it provides a secure digital future-readiness.
Opening bank accounts and using financial services would be significantly simplified with the implementation of an e-ID. This digital ID would also facilitate the digitalization of the economy, making processes more efficient and cost-effective. Businesses would benefit from the e-ID by reducing effort, while citizens would find their daily lives simplified in numerous ways.
In the current debate on voluntariness, Gabriela Keller emphasises the benefits of the e-ID. She states that concerns about data protection are unfounded, and that the criticisms of the earlier solution have been addressed. The new concept of the e-ID is sound and trustworthy, according to Keller.
Ergon Informatik supports this proposal, citing benefits to citizens, the economy, and society. The federal government would be responsible for issuing and operating the digital identity, should the proposal pass.
