Digital Keys Taking Over as Standard in Mainstream Automobiles?
In a significant leap towards modern technology, several automobile manufacturers in India have introduced the digital key feature in their mass-market vehicles. This innovative replacement for a physical key provides a unique code in a smartphone, enabling keyless car access and engine start-up using near field communication (NFC).
Leading the charge is Tata Motors, who have exclusively launched the digital key feature on their newly introduced Harrier EV. Joining Tata Motors in this digital revolution are Hyundai, JSW MG Motor India, and Kia India, all of whom have integrated the digital key feature into various models in their line-up.
Hyundai, for instance, offers this feature on their Creta Electric and Alcazar, with the digital key available on the top-spec variants of these vehicles. Interestingly, Hyundai has reported that only a third of the buyers of these vehicles have enrolled for the digital key feature. On the other hand, MG Motor India has made the digital key feature available across its entire portfolio, not just in top-spec variants.
MG offers the digital key feature on almost all cars they sell in India, with Kia India following close behind. Kia India offers the digital key feature on the EV6 facelift, EV9, and Carnival, as well as on the new Carens Clavis and Carens Clavis EV, although the latter will only activate the feature in 2026.
Bosch, a renowned manufacturer, was the first to introduce the digital key in most vehicles of its series. Their digital vehicle key system, Perfectly keyless, is particularly popular for trucks and fleets, offering keyless smartphone access and easy driver management via an app.
JSW MG Motor India and Kia India have not yet disclosed the number of users who have enrolled for the digital key feature. Hyundai, however, has mentioned that 35% of those who enrolled are sharing the digital key with other users, eliminating the need to share the physical key.
Looking ahead, Tata Motors has expressed plans to expand the digital key feature to more cars in their line-up. This development signifies a promising future for keyless car technology in India, making car ownership more convenient and secure for masses.
