Diocese of Fulda Kicks Off Creation Month with a Comprehensive Sustainability Initiative

The Diocese of Fulda is marking the tenth anniversary of Pope Francis' environmental encyclical Laudato Si' with a series of sustainability initiatives. On September 20, 2025, the diocese will host a Clean-Up Day under the motto "Let's tackle it together!".

Participating churches will receive sustainable prizes such as tree saplings, bulb flowers, or nesting boxes for their efforts. The diocese is also encouraging parishes, schools, kindergartens, clubs, and volunteers to join in the clean-up efforts, each organising their own collection route during the day.

The Diocese of Fulda's sustainability initiatives extend beyond the clean-up day. The diocese is developing a comprehensive climate protection concept, installing photovoltaic systems on school roofs, and switching to renewable energy and modern heating technology. The diocese is also promoting electric mobility and creating gardens to promote biodiversity.

In addition, the diocese has launched a diocesan-wide sustainability award with a total prize money of 15,000 euros. An independent jury will determine the awarding and amount of the prizes, with the goal of honouring, publicising, and networking initiatives. The maximum funding for each project is 3,000 euros. All submitted projects will be showcased during the award ceremony, which will take place on December 4 in Fulda, with General Vicar Dr. Martin Stanke presenting the awards.

The sustainability award is open to parishes, schools, groups, and initiatives until October 31, 2025. The award ceremony will also serve as a platform to showcase the diocese's Month of Creation, which will focus on climate protection, preserving biodiversity, and promoting sustainable practices.
