Diplomatic resolution of nuclear conflict between Merz and Macron, followed by a warning issued to Putin
In a significant move, the German and French governments have pledged to provide further assistance to Ukraine in air defense, in response to the ongoing Russian attacks. This decision comes as both countries move closer together in economic and security policy.
The joint front against Russia extends to the economic sphere, with new sanctions threatened against Russian President Vladimir Putin. In addition, both governments have agreed to simplify procedures and approvals to support energy-intensive industries, facilitating an industrial electricity price in an unbureaucratic and flexible manner.
Economic policy was at the centre of the recent German-French Council of Ministers in Toulon, with a long joint agenda adopted. In central and strategically important areas of industrial production, regulations are to be developed to favor European manufacturers.
The cooperation between the two nations extends beyond economic policy, as they work together to create a modern air combat system. The Future Combat Air System (FCAS) is a joint project between France, Germany, and Spain, aiming to create a next-generation fighter jet and unmanned drones integrated by a digital "Combat Cloud". The current defense ministers leading this collaboration are Germany's Boris Pistorius, France's defense minister, and Spain's Margarita Robles.
In a significant step towards unity, both governments have put aside their long-standing dispute over the use of nuclear power. France, for instance, is not seeking EU funding for nuclear power plants but rather funding for research projects to develop new, smaller reactor types. Germany, on the other hand, will no longer obstruct France's use of nuclear power at the European regulatory level.
Both nations also aim to achieve equal treatment for low-emission energy sources, including nuclear power, on the European level. France has assured Germany of support for the development of hydrogen connections to Southwest Europe and a stronger integration of the power grids between Germany and France.
Despite these efforts, Russia shows no willingness to end its aggression against Ukraine. In response, the French president has already announced new consultations of the coalition of the willing, the supporting countries of Ukraine, in the coming days, where the deployment of troops will also be a topic. Additionally, the tightening of sanctions is being considered to exert "maximum pressure" on Russia to end the war against Ukraine.
The strengthening of ties between Germany and France is not limited to political and economic matters. Both countries are also focusing on the promotion of AI talent and AI programs in an effort to maintain their technological edge.
In a surprising development, French Prime Minister François Bayrou is expected to lose a vote of confidence on September 8, potentially leading to the fall of the government. Despite this, the relationship between French President Emmanuel Macron and German political leaders, such as Friedrich Merz, appears to be strong, boding well for future cooperation between the two nations.
