The Gaza Strip is on the brink of a catastrophic famine, according to reports from doctors and aid organizations. Over the past few months, a complete blockade imposed by the Israeli government has prevented any aid deliveries, leading to a rapid increase in child deaths due to hunger.

The situation is dire, with more than half a million people in Gaza experiencing famine-like conditions. Aid goods are not being effectively distributed due to the lack of secured convoys and looting incidents. As a result, around 250-300 trucks with aid goods have been processed at the crossings to the Gaza Strip in recent days, far from the estimated 600-700 trucks daily needed to avert the famine.

Water and gasoline have also been scarce in the Gaza Strip, leading to a significant increase in diarrhea and yellow fever cases due to the inadequate water supply. The functioning system of humanitarian aid by the United Nations and other aid organizations has been effectively suspended.

The "Gaza Humanitarian Foundation" (GHF), an aid-distribution entity created by Israel with US support in February 2025, has been criticized for failing to respect humanitarian principles and being entangled with Israeli intelligence and US contractors. Experts call for the immediate dismantling of GHF and robust international oversight under UN auspices to prevent impunity and ensure aid reaches Palestinians transparently and effectively.

The UN and international experts have called for an immediate and full ceasefire, unrestricted humanitarian aid access, and international oversight of aid distribution to prevent exploitation and violations of international law. They emphasize the necessity of a political and security framework that addresses both humanitarian needs and the long-term Israeli-Palestinian conflict, aiming for a sustainable two-state solution based on pre-1967 borders, with guaranteed security and sovereignty for both states.

The pressure on the Israeli government to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza is still too low and inconsistent. Aid organizations have warned that without swift and adequate aid, famine and mass deaths in the Gaza Strip are inevitable. The international community of states should engage to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza and return to a political process.
