"Disappointment at the Grand Slam": Zverev encounters another setback in major tennis tournaments
In a surprising turn of events, world number three Alexander Zverev's US Open campaign came to an end in the third round, marking the earliest exit for the German since 2018. The match against Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime, a player who traditionally suits Zverev's style, ended in a 6:4, 6:7 (7:9), 4:6, 4:6 defeat after 3 hours and 48 minutes.
Zverev's only significant highlight this year was reaching the final at the Australian Open. However, his performance at Flushing Meadows was far from impressive. He showed few positive reactions and seemed increasingly helpless during the match.
The German had a chance to lead 2:0 in sets but failed to convert a set point in the tiebreak of the second set. Zverev's lack of self-confidence was evident in his performance, and he attributed his back pain to a long-standing issue, but stated that it was not the reason for his loss.
Zverev played too passively, attributing it to a lack of feel with his forehand and backhand. He expressed self-criticism about his performance, stating that he played poorly overall. The statistics showed that Auger-Aliassime had 50 direct winning shots compared to Zverev's 29.
Despite reaching the final of a Grand Slam five years ago in New York, Zverev has not won a title yet. His year has been "terrible," and the US Open did not change that assessment.
Looking ahead, Zverev will participate in the Laver Cup taking place from September 19 to 21, 2025, in San Francisco as part of Team Europe. He will join forces with Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune, and other teammates under captain Yannick Noah and vice captain Tim Henman, aiming for his sixth Laver Cup title.
Zverev's next tournament following the Laver Cup will be the Davis Cup, where he had previously withdrawn from the German selection's match against Japan on September 12 and 13 in Tokyo.
