EV Sales and Developments: Week of August 7-13
In the latest sales figures, Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Nio saw a 23% decrease in sales compared to the previous week, selling 3,200 units. The decline was partially offset by the strong performance of the Nio ES6 model. Meanwhile, Changan's Deepal delivered 2,900 units, marking a 6% drop in sales.
Tesla, on the other hand, reported growth in sales, with 14,000 units sold in the same week, up from the previous week's 12,800.
A notable development came from BYD, the Chinese multinational conglomerate, who are avoiding EU tariffs by exporting their EVs from a plant in Thailand. The company is also focusing on developing in-house smart car software instead of relying on third-party providers.
However, a claim made by BYD regarding the top speed of their Yangwang U9 model has been debunked. The top speed record for an EV is not currently held by the BYD Yangwang U9.
BYD has also abandoned an agreement to equip its electric vehicles with Baidu's autonomous driving technology, a deal that was announced in March 2022.
Huawei, the tech giant, is venturing into the EV market with a new car set to enter its sales channels next year. The exact brand name of the vehicle has not been determined yet. BAIC New Energy, a subsidiary of BAIC Group, is responsible for providing the chassis architecture and complete vehicle production.
BAIC New Energy's first new car, following their collaboration with Huawei on "smart selection," is a C-class pure electric intelligent sedan. This vehicle, named the Airo P7, will officially debut next year.
Li Auto reported sales of 7,200 units for week 32, consistent with the prior week. Tesla is also making moves in China, planning to form a local operations team of about 20 people to promote the deployment of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) solution in the Chinese market.
Lastly, the electric vehicle brand Zeekr sold 1,700 units in the week of August 7-13. Despite earlier speculations, the new car by BAIC New Energy will not be called "Zeekr" or any other previously mentioned brand names.
