Discovered evidence of the spray-paint perpetrator, Naegeli, in the Bilker shelter in Düsseldorf.
In the heart of Düsseldorf, the Bilker Bunker is currently hosting an exhibition featuring the works of Harald Naegeli, a renowned Swiss graffiti artist. Known as the "Sprayer of Zurich", Naegeli has been leaving his unique mark on city concrete for over 40 years.
Naegeli's most notable works are part of a series called "Urwolke", which consists of relatively large ink drawings featuring a web of lines that take no specific form. These intricate pieces, numbering around four to five hundred, have been a labour of love for the 85-year-old artist for many years.
Five sheets from this series are on display as an installation in the Bilker Bunker, offering visitors a glimpse into Naegeli's creative process. The exhibition also includes subtler appearances of Naegeli's drawings and graphics, such as dogs, parrots, a geometrically poetic creature with a triangular head, a fish woman on a can, and various transparent animals.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is an original Naegeli graffiti, a boldly sprayed eye, which greets visitors at the entrance of the Bilker Bunker. Another notable piece is a flamingo graffiti, rescued from a demolished gas station, temporarily placed in the courtyard of the Bilker Bunker.
Naegeli's graffiti art can also be found throughout the neighbourhood and on the Rhine knee bridge in Düsseldorf. However, his works tend to disappear quickly after they appear, as most were scrubbed off and repainted.
The exhibition titled "Harald Naegeli - Drawings of a Sprayer" is a testament to the artist's resilience and dedication. Naegeli moved back to his parents' house in Zurich in 2019, after reaching an agreement with the NRW Academy of Sciences and Arts based in Unterbilk, Düsseldorf. But his heart has always been in Düsseldorf, where he lived for over 30 years.
The exhibition runs until April 2nd, and information and tickets can be found on the Bilker Bunker's website (www.bilkerbunker.de). The Bilker Bunker is open Wednesdays and Fridays from 5-9 pm, Saturdays from 2-9 pm, and Sundays from 2-6 pm. The venue is located at Aachener Str. 39.
Visitors to the exhibition will not only appreciate the raw beauty of Naegeli's graffiti art but also gain insights into the artist's life, as the exhibition features projections of his life, as well as photographs of his works. It's a must-see for anyone interested in urban art and the creative process behind it.
