Discovered in Albania: Magnificent tomb of a wealthy ancient Roman characteristic of monumental architecture

In early August, a groundbreaking discovery was made by the Institute of Archaeology in Albania. The team, led by project lead archaeologist Erikson Nikolli, unearthed a Roman burial chamber dating back to the third to fourth century AD, near the North Macedonia border. This is the first such find in Albania, which was once part of the Roman Empire.

Last week, Nikolli's team meticulously used brushes to reveal the intricately carved edges of the tomb's white roof stone and walls. The underground structure's large limestone slabs are inscribed with Greek lettering, adding to the tomb's historical significance.

The burial chamber measures a substantial nine metres by six metres (29 ft by 19 ft), making it grander than other burial sites found in the area. A piece of fabric embroidered with gold thread was uncovered, confirming that the person buried there was a member of the upper class.

The inscription in the burial chamber indicates that the person buried was named Gelliano, a name typical of the Roman period. The tomb's grandeur suggests that Gelliano was a wealthy individual. However, the identity of the second individual buried in the tomb remains uncertain. It is likely a family member of Gelliano, given the tomb's size and opulent features.

The discovery has attracted residents to the area, and local authorities in Albania are planning to develop the Roman burial chamber into a tourist attraction. As the investigation continues, the tomb promises to reveal more secrets about the lives of the wealthy Romans in Albania during the Roman Empire's rule.
