In a dramatic turn of events, the rampage shooter from Ansbach, who was convicted for a 2009 school attack, has been arrested in Colombia following his escape from a psychiatric hospital. The man, who was sentenced to nine years in juvenile detention for attempted murder in 47 cases, had been allowed to leave the forensic psychiatry regularly for day trips as part of his therapy since the beginning of the year.

However, about three weeks ago, the man did not return from an unaccompanied leave, triggering a massive manhunt that extended as far as South America. The clinic initially declined to comment on the situation, but investigations soon revealed that the man had met a woman over the internet during his detention.

The shooter's lawyer stated that he had made progress in his therapy, and Muehlberger, a person of interest, suggested that the man might have been able to enjoy more freedom soon, with a potential release within two years. The further detention of the man in the psychiatric hospital was ordered on July 4th of this year.

The repatriation of the Rampage shooter from Colombia suggests that a release might have been considered likely. However, the man's escape and subsequent arrest were described as "movie-like" and the manhunt as "Oscar-worthy" by senior public prosecutor Friedrich Weitner.

Investigations into the shooter's escape have been ongoing, with a contact in the Bavarian state capital being checked. Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann praised the international cooperation in the man's arrest. There were no incidents reported during the man's day trips, according to the public prosecutor's office.

The man's initial trail led to Munich after his escape, but the exact details of how he managed to go underground and get to Colombia remain unclear. Many questions remain open, such as how he managed to evade authorities for such a long period.

The arrest of the Rampage shooter marks the end of a long and complicated chapter in German justice. The man does not face a new trial, but all easing measures may be withdrawn, ensuring that he remains in detention for the foreseeable future.
