In an exciting turn of events, the Holy Cross Crusaders women's basketball team has been making waves under the guidance of head coach Maureen Magarity. After a promising first season as head coach, where the Crusaders went 7-8, the team saw significant improvement in Magarity's second season.

The Crusaders finished the 2021-2022 regular season with an impressive 20-9 record, boasting a strong 14-4 Patriot League record. This stellar performance earned them the regular season divisional title. However, their journey to the top was not without challenges. They faced a tough defeat in the quarterfinals of the playoffs against Navy in a close-fought game.

Magarity's journey to the top began early. Born on March 4th, she made her high school's varsity girls' basketball team as a seventh grader, a testament to her natural talent and dedication to the sport. She attended Our Lady of Lourdes, a Catholic high school in Poughkeepsie, NY, and played on Christ the King, a New York-based AAU team, alongside WNBA and Olympic legend Sue Bird.

Her passion for basketball was nurtured by her parents, particularly her father, Dave, who coached men and women's college basketball, amassing 579 wins over a 38-year career. Her mother, Rita, was her first coach, driving her and her siblings to practice growing up.

Magarity's success continued to shine as she moved on to Boston College. As a senior, she averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds, earning USA Today Honorable Mention All-American honors. However, her college career was marred by injuries, including stress fractures in her feet and a broken foot.

Following her college career, Magarity served as an assistant coach at the United States Military Academy, where she was involved in coaching the women's basketball team. In April 2020, she was hired as the head coach of Holy Cross women's basketball team.

This season, the Crusaders hope to repeat as Patriot League champions with Magarity at the helm. Their next game takes place this Saturday, February 10th, at 3 pm on the road against American (8-13, 6-4 PL). Magarity has also brought in familiar faces to help her team succeed, hiring Kat Fogarty, one of her former players at UNH, as an assistant coach.

As the Crusaders continue to climb the ranks, Magarity has faced some of her idols on the court. In March Madness, she coached against Brenda Frese, one of her all-time role models, a testament to the heights she has reached in her coaching career. With her passion, dedication, and proven track record, there's no telling how far the Crusaders can go under Magarity's leadership.
