Discussion Continues on Colombia's Coal Industry within The Global Energy Transition Podcast (Part 2)
In the summer of 2022, German MP Kathrin Henneberger embarked on a journey to Colombia, a trip that would provide valuable insights and observations that she later shared in a podcast with Michael Buchsbaum.
Henneberger, who entered the Bundestag on a mandate from Green voters, has been a vocal advocate for accelerating the clean energy transition, not just within Germany but also abroad. During her visit, she met with front line coal, oil, and gas communities in Colombia, gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by these communities in their transition towards a sustainable future.
The podcast, which can be listened to below and on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, offers a comprehensive look at Henneberger's experiences in Colombia and her insights into the country's energy transition. For more information, listeners can refer to the preceding podcast with Deutsche Welle correspondent, Judit Alonso, and Michael Buchsbaum's seven-part Colombian Conundrum series.
Back in Germany, Henneberger continues to fight to maintain the environmental and climate gains already in place, a task made more difficult by the ongoing energy crisis. Her constituents live near expanding open pit mines, and Germany's coal mines and lignite-burning power plants are located in the district she represents.
In an effort to further strengthen international cooperation on climate issues, Henneberger has forged a new intergovernmental climate alliance in Colombia. The alliance includes Germany, Denmark, Spain, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Sweden, demonstrating a shared commitment to combating climate change.

Henneberger's efforts to phase out coal in Germany, and her advocacy for clean energy both at home and abroad, continue to make a significant impact in the fight against climate change.
