The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, a prestigious institution that represents the German scientific community in the international academy dialogue, is set to host an online symposium on new advances in medicine. The event, titled "New advances in medicine," is scheduled for Tuesday, 6 July 2021, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (Berlin/Germany) via Zoom.

The symposium is organized by the Class III Medicine section of the Leopoldina and will feature presentations from renowned experts in the field of medicine. Professor Thomas Brabletz will delve into the processes and mechanisms leading to metastases formation and present new therapeutic strategies. His research focuses on the molecular regulation of metastasis, particularly on the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) as a key mechanism driving cancer cell dissemination and potential targets to block metastasis formation.

Professor Aurel Perren will discuss the origin of pancreatic endocrine tumors, molecular markers in precision medicine, and cells of origin. Meanwhile, Professor Lukas Radbruch will address ethical questions at the end of life, focusing on resilience and sense of coherence in palliative care.

The event is open to all interested parties and will be held in English. After successful registration, participants will receive a confirmation email with a dial-in link for the webinar and a password. Prior registration by Sunday, 4 July, is required at Leopoldina's website.

The Leopoldina, founded in 1652 and appointed the National Academy of Sciences of Germany in 2008, develops interdisciplinary statements based on scientific findings and outlines options for action.
