Toyota Embraces Digitalization and Carbon Neutrality for a Sustainable Future

In a series of discussions, President Akio Toyoda has emphasized the importance of working together with partners in the automobile industry, for the betterment of society, and for the children of the future. This emphasis forms part of Toyota's strategy to become a leader in digitalization and carbon neutrality.

The discussions, which mark the starting point of building the future of the industry, were held against the backdrop of the Toyota Production System (TPS). Operating Officer Masanori Kuwata presented two pillars that Toyota should focus on for the next three years: digitalization and carbon neutrality.

In line with these focus areas, Toyota aims to avoid the commoditization of electric vehicles and create a mobility society that offers hope for the future. The company's approach with HEVs has been to prioritize engine efficiency while remaining conscious of fuel efficiency. Interestingly, PHEVs actually have lower CO2 emissions than BEVs over the entire life cycle.

Toyota management believes that converting TNGA platforms capable of accommodating HEVs to create BEVs as required is a viable strategy for working towards carbon neutrality. This strategy also includes energy-saving, technology development, and building partnerships.

One such partnership is with Mazda, where Toyota and Mazda are collaborating on battery reuse and practical factory applications through Toyota's Sweep system. This partnership reflects Toyota's multi-approach strategy to achieve a CO2-free automotive future.

Executive Fellow Shigeki Terashi, formerly the Chief Technology Officer, has promoted electrification as a key focus area. Operating Officer Koji Sato has emphasized the importance of Toyota's strengths in electrification and providing a wide range of electrified powertrain solutions.

President Akio Toyoda has committed to making rapid advances in digitalization in the next three years, aiming to bring Toyota up to the level of world's top companies. He desires to lead the automobile industry in the two pillars of digitalization and carbon neutrality. Akio Toyoda envisions a mobility society that offers happiness for all as a future goal.

The topic of carbon neutrality was not just about reducing CO2 emissions during the use of vehicles, but also about reducing CO2 generated throughout the entire process of making, transporting, using, recycling, and disposing of goods. CO2 is emitted during the production, use, and disposal of machines, equipment, computers, solar panels, metals, resins, and transportation.

Prime Minister Suga's pledge of carbon neutrality means reducing all CO2 emissions to net-zero by 2050. Akio Toyoda believes that Toyota could become a presence for which industry peers may be thankful for if they lead in digitalization and carbon neutrality.

Every spring, Toyota hosts discussions between company management and employee representatives. These discussions bring home the importance of mutually beneficial relationships in the automobile industry where everyone finds a way to come together. Toyota Times intends to continue watching those efforts closely moving forward.
