Discussion on the Multiplicity of Discussion Topics

Meta's latest offering, Threads, a microblogging service, is now available in Germany, providing a fresh alternative to traditional social media platforms.

Threads can be accessed through the app, the web at https://www.threads.net, or via an Instagram profile. Users can share threads in their Instagram story or feed. Unlike other platforms, Threads uses topic tags instead of classic hashtags.

Posts on Threads can be up to 500 characters long, with support for voice threads, photos, videos, and links. Blue ticks on Threads are directly inherited from Twitter, indicating a message has been read.

The author, Theresa, expresses concerns about the addition of another platform to the mix. However, compared to other alternatives, Threads is currently considered the best option. Choosing social media platforms should be based on target audiences and goals, and Threads could be beneficial for political communication.

In the coming months, political communication on the platform Threads will be primarily organic. Meta (which owns Threads) will ban all paid political advertising in the EU starting October 10, 2025, due to the EU’s Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising (TTPA) regulation. While users, creators, and politicians can still post and discuss political content, they cannot promote it via paid ads.

The platform is gaining importance as a space for short text communication and is seen as a clear alternative to platforms like X (formerly Twitter). City administrations like Dresden are beginning to use Threads for official communication, indicating the platform's growing role in public and political discourse.

However, organizations and actors may find it difficult to manage another social media platform alongside existing ones. Building an audience on Threads may initially be challenging. A user's Threads account can only be deleted if they delete their Instagram account.

The usage of Threads will be better understood in a couple of months once it stabilizes. In the meantime, the platform regularly posts "Threadly tips" on the "Threads" page to help users navigate the new service. Users can link Instagram profiles that aren't on Threads in posts, and they'll be notified that they've been mentioned. Users can use Threads with or without an Instagram profile.

Despite a mix of sarcasm and hate speech on the Threads platform at present, it remains to be seen how the community will evolve as the platform grows in popularity. It's recommended to focus on select platforms based on target audiences and goals to avoid spreading oneself too thin across multiple social media platforms.
