Discussion on Ukraine's future: Trump deliberates action plans following dialogue with Putin
In a series of recent developments, President Donald Trump has been actively engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
After speaking with Putin, Trump has not yet revealed his next steps, but has confirmed that he will be in touch again in the coming days. This follows their meeting in Alaska, where they discussed the Ukraine conflict and peace talks.
Trump's stance on security guarantees for independent Ukraine remains unchanged. He has expressed no desire to provide such guarantees.
Meanwhile, Putin held a press conference in Beijing, outlining his positions for further talks with Ukraine. The Russian army is reportedly making progress, but Europe is not yet ready to take on all the risks without Trump's guarantees.
Trump's decision to not attend a scheduled "summit" and the ongoing trade war with Russia's allies have not gone well for him. However, Trump was likely briefed about Putin's press conference in Beijing.
In a meeting with Polish President Karol Nawrocki at the White House, Trump made statements about Russia and Ukraine. He also set a new, unclear deadline of another week or so, indicating that he is still weighing his options.
Trump's only remaining option seems to be to put strong pressure on Ukrainian President Zelensky. In fact, he plans to hold an online meeting with Zelensky and his European patrons tomorrow. After this meeting, Trump is likely to call the Kremlin.
Trump has not specified the consequences of his plan, but mentioned that it has "phase two and phase three" in case the pace of peaceful settlement disappoints him. The parade held in Beijing, attended by Xi Jinping, Putin, and Kim Jong Un, was described as "impressive" by Trump.
