Display of Photographic Artwork at Clara Maria Sels Gallery
In the heart of Düsseldorf, the Clara Maria Sels Gallery will be hosting an extraordinary exhibition titled "Echoes of the Unseen" from September 5 to November 8, 2025. This captivating display will showcase traditional historical garments from various world regions, offering a unique insight into the rich tapestry of human culture.
The exhibition promises to be a feast for the eyes, with a diverse array of costumes on display. Visitors can expect to see Serbian costumes adorned with velvet jackets and intricate beadwork, Romanian embroidered blouses worn with white headscarves, a simple northern German dress from the island of Föhr, a floral-beaded cap from the Hannover area, a fully veiling pink garment from Turkmenistan, and a showgirl costume from Havana’s Tropicana, complete with a candelabra-style headdress.
Each garment embodies knowledge passed down through generations and reflects social, aesthetic, and political narratives. They are more than just clothing; they are carriers of history, identity, and collective belonging.
While the "Echoes of the Unseen" exhibition will be the main attraction at Clara Maria Sels Gallery, another significant photography event will be taking place simultaneously in Düsseldorf. The works of Horst P. Horst, often referred to as the "king of fashion photography," will be displayed at the NRW-Forum, thanks to the mediation by the Düsseldorf Photo Weekend. Horst is renowned for his portraits of Marlene Dietrich and Coco Chanel, among others.
Meanwhile, the acclaimed photographer Corina Gertz will be giving a lecture at the prestigious photography symposium Nida in Lithuania in September. Gertz, who is based in Düsseldorf, is known for her work capturing women in traditional clothing from various cultures. Her long-term project, "The Averted Portrait," focuses on the back view of the portrayed, with clothing as the primary information carrier.
Gertz's works will also be part of the official program Purple Path of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 in Germany. A comprehensive monograph on Corina Gertz was published by Kerber Verlag in 2023, featuring text contributions from Susanna Brown, Claire Freestone, and Barbara Til.
Clara Maria Sels Gallery, founded in 1989, has focused on photography since the mid-1990s. It represents internationally oriented positions, from established artists to promising young talents. The "Echoes of the Unseen" exhibition will feature around 20 selected works by Corina Gertz.
The exhibition will be opened on Friday, September 5, 2025, at 6 pm. Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of traditional garments and the stories they tell.
