Disruption in Public Transport of Dusseldorf on a Friday

On February 21, public transport employees in six federal states, including North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), will stage a strike, as called for by the United Services Trade Union (ver.di). The strike, which will span the entire day, from the start to the end of operations, is expected to cause significant disruptions across various modes of transportation.

The strike is a response to the challenging working conditions faced by public transport employees. High absenteeism and frequent cancellations of buses and trains are a result of the stress faced by remaining employees. Thousands of public transport employees are expected to retire in the coming years, and many new hires leave quickly due to low wages, further exacerbating the situation.

The deputy chairperson of ver.di, Christine Behle, emphasizes that the situation for public transport employees is problematic due to a severe lack of personnel, high workload, impending retirements, and low wages. Behle argues that public transport is a public service and that municipalities should not be left alone with the financing of attractive working conditions.

The strike will affect a wide range of public transport companies in NRW, including Rheinbahn, Wupsi, KVB, RSVG, SWB-V, the city trains of Monheim, Regio Mettmann, WSW mobil, Stadtwerke Solingen, Stadtwerke Remscheid, Ruhrbahn, STOAG, DVG Duisburg, and others. In Düsseldorf, the Rheinbahn will be impacted by the strike.

Specific lines that will be affected include the SB51, 722, 730, 746, 770, 771, 782, 785, 831, and 834. However, the on-demand service flexy will not be affected by the strike, with the service area and hours of operation remaining the same. Trains operated by Deutsche Bahn, National Express, and others will also not be affected by the strike.

The emergency schedule organized by Rheinbahn will not ensure buses run according to schedule, and passengers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly. The federal government and the states must recognize the future of public transport as their responsibility, according to Behle.
