Disruptions at Düsseldorf's airport occur on Monday following a transport strike in the city

Düsseldorf Airport is bracing for a turbulent week as multiple companies have announced a 24-hour strike starting early Monday morning. The affected companies include Düsseldorf Airport GmbH, Düsseldorf Airport Ground-Handling GmbH, Düsseldorf Airport Security GmbH, Aviapartner Düsseldorf GmbH, AAS Düsseldorf GmbH, AHS Düsseldorf Aviation Handling Services GmbH, WISAG Passage Service Düsseldorf GmbH, and WISAG Airport Service Düsseldorf GmbH.

The strike, led by the United Services Trade Union (ver.di NRW), is in response to demands for better working conditions and higher wages. Ver.di is seeking an eight percent wage increase, at least 350 euros more per month, and higher allowances for demanding tasks. The union is also demanding three additional free days to counteract high workload.

The strike is expected to have significant impacts on passenger flights, with ver.di predicting numerous cancellations and delays. As of Monday morning, about half of the 334 originally planned takeoffs and landings have already been canceled. Passengers are advised to check the status of their flight with their airline or travel agency before traveling to the airport.

Gabriele Schmidt, ver.di's regional leader in NRW, has stated that employees at NRW airports are heavily burdened by increasing workloads and staff shortages. Schmidt has pointed out that the physically demanding work, high time pressure, and responsibility for people and technology, combined with high costs of food, rent, and ancillaries, do not allow for future-proof and attractive working conditions at major airports.

In addition to the wage increase and free days, ver.di is also demanding a "My Time Account" to provide employees with more time sovereignty and flexibility. The union is also requesting an increase in training allowances and internship wages by 200 euros per month.

The third round of wage negotiations between ver.di and employers is scheduled for March 14-16, 2025, in Potsdam. The negotiating parties include the trade unions (including dbb beamtenbund und tarifunion and ver.di NRW) and the employers' side.

Passengers should expect delays, reroutings, and cancellations at Düsseldorf Airport throughout the strike period. Late-night check-in on the evening before is not available at the airport. It is recommended that travellers plan their journey accordingly and allow extra time for potential disruptions.
