Documentary-style short film created by DJ and techno pioneer, Richie Hawtin, revolving around the vibrant and influential '90s Detroit techno scene.
Richie Hawtin, the acclaimed techno artist behind the Plastikman project, has executive produced a short film titled "Kids Like Us". The film, directed and written by Luke Jaden, offers an immersive experience of the sacred, self-exploring atmosphere of techno parties to those who haven't had the chance to experience it firsthand.
Set in the early '90s Detroit electronic music scene, "Kids Like Us" explores themes of identity, dislocation, and connection. The film was shot on 35mm film to create a sense of realism and authenticity, capturing the essence of an actual techno party experience.
The film centers on one of a series of illegal raves Hawtin hosted at the abandoned Packard Automotive Plant, with the Spastik party, where Hawtin debuted his legendary Plastikman alias in 1994, being a significant event featured. Attendees at the Spastik party included The Blessed Madonna and Mute Records' Daniel Miller.
Luke Jaden, deeply inspired by the early '90s underground techno culture in Detroit, conducted deep archaeological-style research to expose the smallest details of the era. This dedication is evident in the film's careful considerations, especially when it comes to pivotal moments of Hawtin's career and events that touched countless individuals' lives.
Hawtin felt that Jaden was fascinated by the stories of the early days of the Detroit rave scene and wanted to uncover the true magic of those times. This shared passion is reflected in the honest and engaging narrative of the events that transpired during that time.
In addition to his work on "Kids Like Us", Hawtin also reissued the seminal minimal techno project Musik, originally released under the Plastikman alias, last year. The reissue was in recognition of Musik's 30th anniversary.
"Kids Like Us" is now available to watch via NOWNESS or YouTube. The film serves as a testament to the enduring influence of the Detroit electronic music scene and offers a unique glimpse into a pivotal chapter in Hawtin's career.
