Dogs catch the surf in California to gather funds

In the sunny coastal town of Del Mar, California, this Sunday, over fifty dogs took to the waves for the world's longest-running dog surfing event. The competition, now in its twenty-first year, continues to be the only dog surfing event where all proceeds go to animal welfare.

The event, which began in 2013, has grown in popularity over the years, attracting dog-loving spectators and participants from far and wide. This year, the competition lasted for six hours, with the dogs maintaining their balance on four paws while surfing on boards pushed by their owners.

One of the highlights of the event was Faith, a thirteen-year-old Border Collie, who has been participating in the competition since its inception in 2013. Owned by James Wall, Faith has won the hearts of many with her impressive surfing skills. James, who has been participating in the event for thirteen years, stated that it has been an incredible journey for him.

Jessica Gercke, communications director of the Helen Woodward Animal Center, explained that participants are not just having fun but also saving lives. The organization that receives the majority of the proceeds from the annual dog surfing competition is the Surf Dog Foundation, which supports multiple animal shelters in California.

The Surf Dog Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming orphaned animals. The funds raised from the dog surfing competition are essential in providing medical care, food, and shelter for these animals.

The competition aims to raise money for a local animal shelter, with 100% of the competition's proceeds being donated to orphaned animals and programs. The event has been happening annually for twenty years, and it continues to be a popular event in the Del Mar community.

The dog surfing competition is not just a fun day out for the dogs and their owners; it is also an opportunity to raise awareness about animal welfare and to support local animal shelters. So, if you're ever in Del Mar on a sunny Sunday, don't miss out on the pawsome spectacle of the dog surfing competition!
