Domestic auto sales for Maruti Suzuki decrease by 5.5% in May 2025, with a notable drop in mini and compact car sales.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited, the country's largest automobile manufacturer, has reported its sales figures for May 2025. The company's performance was marked by a significant increase in exports, which contributed to the growth in sales.

In the domestic market, sales decreased by 5.5% compared to May 2024, with a total of 138,690 units sold. This decline was observed across various segments, with the entry-level Mini segment seeing a 31.6% drop and passenger vehicle sales decreasing by 5.6%. The Mid-size sedan Ciaz and the SUV/MPV portfolio also experienced a decrease in sales, by 37.3% and 1.3% respectively.

However, the standout figure in Maruti Suzuki's performance was its export sales in May 2025. The export tally for the month was 31,219 units, marking an impressive 79.7% jump from the previous year. This growth was reflected in the year-to-date export figure for April-May FY26, which showed a strong momentum with 59,130 units dispatched, up 49.6% from the previous year.

The most important export market for vehicles from Maruti Suzuki in the period April-May FY26 is Nepal. Other significant contributors to the growth in exports include the Eeco van, which saw a 12.5% year-over-year (YoY) increase in sales, reaching 12,327 units in May 2025.

Total cumulative sales, including exports, rose to 359,868 units, showing a 5% increase over the same period last fiscal year. Despite robust export performance, Maruti's total domestic sales (including OEM and LCV) for April-May FY26 slightly decreased, standing at 300,738 units compared to the same period last year.

Sales to Other Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) also decreased by 3.1% in May 2025, with 10,168 units sold compared to 10,490 units in May 2024. The Super Carry light commercial vehicle, on the other hand, had a minor increase, rising to 2,728 units in May 2025, registering a 1.3% growth.

The SUV/MPV portfolio of Maruti Suzuki showed a marginal 1.3% growth in sales in May 2025 compared to the same month last year. Cumulative OEM sales for April-May FY26 grew by 25.2% to 19,995 units compared to the same period last fiscal.

In conclusion, while Maruti Suzuki's domestic sales saw a slight decline, the company's robust export performance, particularly in the Eeco van and overall export figures, provided a significant boost to its total sales in May 2025. Nepal remains the most important export market for the company in the period April-May FY26.
