Dr. Alexandra Tsigarida Appointed Board Member for American Academy of Periodontology
New Trustee of the American Academy of Periodontology to Boost Periodontal Education
Dr. Alexandra Tsigarida, the program director for the Periodontology Residency Program at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health (EIOH), has been elected as a Trustee of the American Academy of Periodontology's (AAP) Board of Directors in its 7 District, representing New York and New Jersey.
In her new role, Dr. Tsigarida aims to reinforce the Academy's vision on scientific and technological innovation, while also promoting the strategic planning and certification process of the American Board of Periodontology. She will serve a two-year term from 2024 to 2026.
Dr. Tsigarida has been actively involved in enhancing periodontal education, both at the pre-doctoral and postdoctoral levels. As the chair of the AAP's Education Committee, she has led the recruitment of volunteer educators to develop supplementary educational materials known as AAP Education Access. These materials, collectively known as AAP Education Access, are now available on the AAP website.
One of the training modules developed by Dr. Tsigarida focuses on treating patients with disabilities, a topic that she believes fills a gap in many dental school's curricula. More training modules are in the planning and production stages.
Dr. Jack Caton, chair of EIOH's Periodontology Department, expressed delight over Dr. Tsigarida's latest accomplishment, praising her dedication to improving periodontal education.
In addition to her work with the AAP, Dr. Tsigarida is also a member of an AAP task force to evaluate pre-doctoral education this year. She plans to continue her efforts to support and improve periodontal education, including helping to establish collaborations with medical colleagues.
The AAP Education Access materials were developed by the AAP Education Committee in response to surveying periodontal educators and identifying the needs of periodontal programs across the U.S. and Canada. These training modules can be inserted into existing curricula to complement the training of periodontal residents or dental students.
As Dr. Tsigarida embarks on her new role as a Trustee, she looks forward to making a significant impact on the future of periodontal education.
