Draft call-up expansion: those eligible to reject military service now identified
In the coming years, a significant change is on the horizon for young men in the nation. According to the latest government plans, those born after January 1, 2010, will be obligated to apply for conscientious objection when they reach conscription age, as the government aims to reactivate compulsory military service if volunteer targets are not met.
Starting from next January, young men of the 2008 cohort will begin filling out questionnaires for military service. This marks the beginning of the process, with only a select group initially invited for an "assessment" – an evaluation.
The anticipated introduction of mandatory conscription for men is scheduled for July 1, 2027. However, the debate on conscription has led to a surge in the number of counseling requests, with more than a 30 percent increase last year.
This surge is evident in the statistics, as the counseling centers' website saw 54,946 visits in August, compared to just 24,151 in May. This increase in attendance at the counseling centers for military service refusal indicates a growing concern and interest among the youth.
In an effort to attract more volunteers, higher pay is to be an incentive for military service. However, it remains to be seen whether this will be enough to counter the growing interest in conscientious objection.
It is important to note that young women can fill out questionnaires but are not obliged to do so. This difference in obligation between genders is a topic of ongoing discussion and debate.
As the date for the reintroduction of mandatory conscription approaches, it is clear that the nation's youth are actively seeking information and support regarding their options. The increased attendance at the counseling centers for military service refusal serves as a testament to this trend.
