Drought and bureaucratic inertia lead to increasing tree fatalities in Bajo Andarax, Almería

In the southern Spanish province of Almería, a crisis is unfolding as hundreds of trees, primarily pines, olives, and almonds, are dying due to extreme drought and the lack of climate adaptation measures. This alarming situation has been denounced by environmental organisations such as PACMA, who have raised concerns about the management of water in the Autonomous Community and the authorities' apparent inaction.

The Animalist Party has called for immediate action from local, autonomous, and state administrations to implement conservation, reforestation, and climate adaptation plans. The urgency of the situation is underscored by the fact that desertification is no longer a future threat but a present reality, according to PACMA.

The municipalities affected include Almería capital, Huercal de Almería, Benahadux, Gádor, and Alhama de Almería. Driving along the N-340 through Huercal de Almería and Benahadux reveals dozens of dead trees, many of them large pines of considerable age.

PACMA emphasises that climate change is causing its most devastating effects in particularly vulnerable areas like southeastern Spain, where the increase in temperatures and lack of rainfall is accelerating an unprecedented desertification process. The organisation denounces the inaction of the competent administrations, which they say are not adopting effective measures to stop this ecological loss or to restore the affected forest masses.

Other environmental organisations, such as PACMA, have also denounced negligence in the Autonomous Community regarding water management and the lack of measures to protect native trees. The province of Almería, with its Mediterranean climate characterized by its irregular rainfall, cannot use the lack of rain as an excuse for letting hundreds of trees die.

With a little goodwill, plans can be implemented to reverse the situation and at the same time, combat the harmful consequences of climate change in the Almerian community. The issue of trees dying seems to have taken authorities by surprise, despite it being a process that has been gestating for a long time.

As of now, there is no publicly known specific activist or organisation within the Animal Party currently leading efforts in Almería for addressing tree death and environmental degradation with demands for urgent conservation, reforestation, and climate adaptation from local to national governments.

The problem of desertification and water deficit is a major environmental conflict that Almería must face. It is crucial for the authorities to take immediate action to prevent the dying of native trees and to implement conservation, reforestation, and climate adaptation plans to preserve the natural beauty and ecological balance of the region.
