'During a total lunar eclipse, the moon appears to take on a red color, known as a 'Blood Moon' phenomenon'
In the year 2025, stargazers in Europe and Africa will have a unique opportunity to witness a celestial spectacle - a total lunar eclipse, also known as a "blood moon". This event will mark the first total lunar eclipse visible in mainland Europe since 2006.
The upcoming eclipse is significant as it will be the first total lunar eclipse since a solar eclipse swept across North America in April 2024. Unfortunately, the Americas will not be able to catch a glimpse of this event.
The total lunar eclipse, scheduled between 17:30 GMT and 18:52 GMT, will be visible in a roughly 160-kilometre (100-mile) band between Madrid and Barcelona, Spain. However, neither Madrid nor Barcelona will see the full totality of the eclipse. Other countries, such as Iceland, will also have the privilege of viewing this cosmic event.
The red colour of the Moon during a lunar eclipse is a result of the dispersed blue light. As the Earth's atmosphere scatters the blue wavelengths of light, the Moon appears red due to sunlight reflected and scattered through the Earth's atmosphere.
Ryan Milligan, an astrophysicist at Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland, explained this phenomenon, stating, "The blue wavelengths of light are more easily dispersed than red ones, causing the Moon to appear red during a lunar eclipse."
Stargazers in Europe and Africa had a brief chance to see a partial eclipse during the early evening. Meanwhile, Asia, including India and China, eastern Africa, and western Australia were able to witness the total lunar eclipse in March of this year.
For those in Europe, the next total lunar eclipse visible will be on September 7, 2025. Good observation locations will have clear eastern horizons, but the event will not be tied to just one city name. It will be a "blood moon" visible at moonrise.
So, mark your calendars, stargazers! The upcoming total lunar eclipse promises to be a spectacle not to be missed.
