Dutch Official Suggests Prohibition of Puppy Yoga (which has left us pondering the reasons)
In recent news, the popular trend of puppy yoga has come under scrutiny due to concerns over animal welfare. The practice, which combines yoga and spending time with dogs, has been banned outright in Italy last month, with the Netherlands expected to follow suit.
The ban in Italy was welcomed by Italian dog expert Giusy D'Angelo, who described puppy yoga as detrimental to the dogs' wellbeing. D'Angelo stated that the practice is a "physically and mentally stressful experience" for young pups and only benefits those who run the classes.
The UK's largest animal welfare charity, the RSPCA, has also urged people to avoid puppy yoga due to animal welfare concerns and a lack of regulation. An investigation by British broadcaster ITV found that puppies as young as six weeks old were deprived of sleep and water during puppy yoga sessions.
Puppy yoga has its roots in goat yoga, which originated in the US in 2016. Some studios allow participants to choose the breed of dog in their session, but the practice is not included in the vet's guide to dog exercise.
The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority is expected to monitor other wellness trends involving animals, and the Agriculture Minister of the Netherlands, Pieter Adema, has stated that puppy yoga serves no purpose and could negatively impact a puppy's behavior. Adema advised against participating in puppy yoga, asking if participants really want to subject puppies to such activities.
In response to these concerns, the legislative initiative to ban puppy yoga in the Netherlands will be introduced by the Dutch political party SP (Socialist Party). The law, if passed, would prohibit the use of young animals, not just puppies, in yoga classes.
Despite the controversy, participants in puppy yoga sessions often claim lowered anxiety levels.
