Dutch pension funds back Mentha impact investment fund
In a significant move towards sustainable investing, the Mentha Impact Fund I has raised €153m at its first close. The fund, managed by the Amsterdam-based private equity firm Mentha, will focus on investments in small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that contribute to achieving climate and environmental goals.
The Mentha Impact Fund I is a buyout fund, which typically invests in companies with the intention of buying a majority stake. It targets SMEs with revenues between €5m and €100m in the Benelux and Denmark. Alongside financing buyouts, the fund will also provide growth capital to companies with impactful results.
The founder of Mentha, Lucas S. Zehnder, established the Mentha Impact Fund I in Zurich, Switzerland. Edo Pfennings, co-founder of Mentha, stated that the new fund is a natural step in their development to increasingly focus on improving the sustainability results of their companies with a sharp eye on people and the planet, but also with sound financial results.
The fund invests in themes such as resource efficiency, sustainable production, and process technology. It also supports the decarbonisation of SMEs, which are often overlooked in efforts to combat climate change. The Mentha Impact Fund I is particularly focused on the energy transition.
APG, an asset manager for the Dutch pension funds of ABP and bpfBOUW, has invested in the Mentha Impact Fund I. However, the details about APG's level of commitment to the fund have not been disclosed. The Mentha Impact Fund I is one of the investments made by APG.
The investments made by the Mentha Impact Fund I align with APG's commitment to responsible and sustainable investing. By supporting the decarbonisation of SMEs, the fund contributes to APG's goal of creating a more sustainable future for its clients and the world.
In conclusion, the Mentha Impact Fund I's €153m first close marks an important step in the fight against climate change. By investing in SMEs that prioritise sustainability and the energy transition, the fund is helping to create a more sustainable future for all.
