E-bike riders tend to disregard traffic lights, potentially endangering lives.
In a worrying development, a new study has revealed that a significant number of cyclists, e-bike riders, and e-scooter riders are routinely disregarding traffic signals. The research, conducted along busy streets in London, Manchester, and Glasgow, involved over 45,000 road users.
Bryn Brooker, head of road safety at Nextbase, expressed his concern about the disregard for traffic laws. He stated that ignoring traffic laws puts pedestrians', cyclists', and other road users' lives at risk. Mr. Brooker's sentiments were echoed by Rod Dennis, the RAC road safety spokesman.
The study found that a fifth of e-bike riders, e-scooter riders, and cyclists disregard red lights. Rental e-bikes were found to be the worst offenders, with 25% observed ignoring traffic lights. At Oxford Circus, London, a staggering 50% of bike and scooter riders were found to be skipping signals. The Holloway Road and Drayton Park junction in London had the second-highest rate, with 46% of riders disregarding signals.
The situation in Manchester was not much better, with the Deansgate and John Dalton Street junction recording a high rate of 42% of riders jumping red lights. In Glasgow, 45% of riders were observed disregarding red lights at Duke Street and Bellgrove Street.
The illegality of skipping red lights was further highlighted by Lime, the e-bike rental company, which launched an advertising campaign in August to warn riders about the potential consequences. Riders who ignore red lights can be fined £50. If they are convicted of dangerous cycling in court, they can be fined up to £2,500.
Unfortunately, the study also found that riders were observed using their phones, eating, drinking, smoking, and vaping while riding. Eight percent of drivers were reported as distracted at red lights.
The advertising campaign was placed on popular commuter routes and intersections in an attempt to raise awareness and promote safer riding habits. The search results do not identify a specific city with the most cyclists and scooter riders observed ignoring traffic light signals.
Ignoring red lights can put all road users into huge danger, and the potential consequences are not worth it. It is crucial for all road users to adhere to traffic laws to ensure the safety of everyone on the road.
