E-scooter accident surge: here are the applicable rules

In the city of Recklinghausen, e-scooters have become a popular mode of transportation for many residents and visitors. However, it's essential to understand the rules and regulations that govern their use to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride for everyone.

Firstly, e-scooters are not permitted on sidewalks or in pedestrian zones. Instead, they can be ridden on designated bike lanes, shared pedestrian and bike paths, bike lanes, and bike streets within built-up areas. Outside these areas, the shoulder or roadway may be used if no designated path is available.

When it comes to sharing the roads with other users, pedestrians have the right of way on shared pedestrian and bike paths, and speed should be adjusted accordingly. Faster cyclists, including those riding e-scooters, should be given the opportunity to overtake when necessary.

It's important to note that drivers under 21 and those in their probationary period are not allowed to drink any alcohol if they're riding an e-scooter. This rule is emphasised by Police Chief Commissioner Heitkamp.

At traffic lights, the signal for cyclists or the signal for moving traffic applies to e-scooters. However, if a ban on motor vehicles is in place, e-scooters can only be used if explicitly allowed by an additional sign.

The district administration of Recklinghausen is responsible for the local traffic commissions in nine out of ten cities in the Recklinghausen district.

Safety is a top priority, and the small wheels on e-scooters increase the risk of accidents on uneven bike lanes or roads, especially on wet surfaces. It is recommended to wear bright clothing to be more visible to other road users.

Lastly, e-scooters do not have priority on pedestrian crossings and should be pushed over them like bicycles. By following these rules, we can ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all road users in Recklinghausen.
