Eastern Aviation Hub Set for Development at Treat Airport
Bangkok Airways, a leading Thai airline, has announced ambitious plans to upgrade Trat Airport, located in the Khao Saming district, approximately 35km from downtown Trat and 17km from the Koh Chang ferry pier. The airport, currently operated by Bangkok Airways, served 40,427 passengers in the first half of 2025, making it a key gateway to many tourist destinations.
CEO of Bangkok Airways, Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, made the announcement during a press conference at Trat airport, highlighting the airport's potential as a regional air traffic center. The first phase of the airport upgrade is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2026, with the passenger terminal enlarged from 2,100 square metres to 3,400 sq/m. The runway will also be extended from 1.8 kilometres to 2 kilometres.
The estimated cost of the Trat airport upgrade is 400 million baht, as announced by Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth. The expansion comes as the airline prepares for a rise in passenger numbers during the coming tourism season. If tourist numbers continue to rise, Trat airport plans to resume flights to Surat Thani's Koh Samui and Krabi, which were stopped years ago.
In addition, Bangkok Airways is open to welcoming other commercial airlines, including low-cost carriers, at Trat airport. The CEO also mentioned the possibility of flights to Cambodia's Siem Reap, Koh Kong, or Sihanoukville from Trat airport, provided the border conflict is resolved.
Currently, Bangkok Airways operates two daily round-trip Bangkok-Trat flights and plans to increase this to three flights per day in October to meet high-season demand. The airport covers 1,600 rai of land and is located in tambon Tha Som of Khao Saming district.
The announcement was made not only at Trat airport but also at Suvarnabhumi Airport, signalling Bangkok Airways' commitment to improving regional connectivity and supporting the growth of tourism in the Trat province.
