In a joint effort to enhance the security of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the defense ministers of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Poland met in Daugavpils to discuss the strengthening of the Baltic airspace patrol mission and the introduction of the air defense rotation model.
The meeting, which included a remote discussion with NATO officials, also focused on attracting funding for joint projects aimed at strengthening the external borders of the alliance, including its airspace. Minister Spruds made these statements after the meeting in Daugavpils.
The coordinator of the announced specific roadmap for the creation of the Baltic Defense Line is Taavi Kuuseok. This initiative aims to create a secure, fortified border along the entire length of the region's borders with Russia and Belarus.
Minister Andris Spruds stated that additional air defense units have been deployed in Latgale, Latvia's easternmost region. However, the defense ministers did not discuss the deployment of additional air defense units or the strengthening of air defense capabilities in Latgale during the meeting, as these topics were previously covered.
The defense ministers agreed on a specific roadmap for the creation of the Baltic defense line, as discussed in the previous meeting in Daugavpils. They also agreed on the need to strengthen the eastern flank of the alliance. As a result, they agreed on further regular cooperation to achieve these goals.
Ukrainian colleagues shared practical experience on strengthening land borders during the meeting. Minister Spruds mentioned that serious threats from Russia and drone challenges are present, emphasising the urgency of the measures being proposed.
The Latvian Ministry of Defense reported that discussions about the work done so far in these areas took place. The deployment of these units is aimed at strengthening both airspace surveillance and strike capabilities.
The defense ministers agreed on the importance of attracting the support of NATO and the EU for the creation of the Baltic defense line. The deployment of additional air defense units and the strengthening of air defense capabilities are crucial steps towards achieving a secure and protected Baltic region.
