Eastman Institute in New York welcomes patient from Ithaca for intricate dental procedures following cancer surgery

In a remarkable turn of events, retired psychotherapist Jack Reid is now able to enjoy his favourite foods once again, thanks to the skilled team at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health.

After a cancer diagnosis that led to the removal of three bottom teeth and a significant portion of surrounding tissue, Jack was left with edentulism (toothlessness). Traditional dentures were not an option for him, and a more complex solution was required.

Dr. Ira Kamp, Jack's general dentist in Ithaca, recommended him to Eastman, where a team of specialists, including oral surgery and prosthodontics, could manage his complex condition. The team, comprising Dr. Alexis Ghanem, Dr. Alejandro Sanchez Lara, Dr. Oscar Ramos, and Dr. Aron Lee, set out to find a solution for Jack.

The first step was to perform a bone graft, followed by the placement of an initial implant. However, the implant did not fuse properly, leading to a setback in Jack's recovery. Undeterred, the team persevered and, four months later, placed a second implant after a second bone graft.

The process was not easy for Jack, who lost about 15 pounds during recovery due to being able to eat only soup and soft foods for several weeks. But he remained optimistic, believing he had a lifetime warranty on his smile.

The team's efforts proved worthwhile, as the second implant fused properly, and Jack is now able to eat what he wants. His case was beneficial learning for the residents at Eastman, providing them with valuable insights into managing complex conditions.

Dr. Ghanem highlighted the impact of age on dentists seeing challenging cases, emphasising the importance of residents facing difficult cases to learn. Dr. Sanchez Lara also stressed the significance of such cases, stating that they offer invaluable opportunities for residents to gain practical experience.

Jack expressed his appreciation for the care he received at Eastman, stating that he felt well-cared for and supported throughout his treatment. X-rays and impressions were taken and evaluated for Jack's treatment plan, ensuring the best possible outcome.

The success of Jack's treatment is a testament to the expertise and dedication of the team at Eastman Institute. Their interdisciplinary approach and commitment to providing the best possible care have ensured that Jack can once again enjoy his favourite foods and regain his confidence.
