The Berlin-Hamburg railway line is currently undergoing a comprehensive renovation, with the rail replacement service being operated by Ecovista since early August. However, passengers are facing various challenges during this nine-month closure.

The punctuality of the rail replacement service stands at around 91 percent, which is a commendable figure, but the lack of essential amenities and facilities is causing significant inconvenience for commuters. At smaller stations, the absence of ticket machines is causing issues for those without access to digital channels.

The rail replacement service between Hamburg and Berlin currently lacks sufficient toilets, passenger information, and ticket vending machines. This deficiency, coupled with longer travel times and increased transfer demands due to a complex replacement concept, is causing discomfort, confusion, and inconvenience for passengers.

The Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB) has expressed criticism about the passenger information and signage on the buses of the rail replacement service. Ecovista, the service operator, has acknowledged the issue of the lack of ticket machines at smaller stations and has referred it to the responsible associations and BahnEisenbahn Verkehrs Nachrichten (EVN).

To address the issue of insufficient toilets, Ecovista has ordered more than 200 new buses for the service. Currently, 170 of these buses are in permanent operation, with the rest in reserve. Notably, there are no toilets in the vehicles on the line R between Seegefeld and Kyritz in Brandenburg, with only lines X1 and X4 having toilets, but not in all vehicles.

To accommodate the increased demand for bus drivers, Ecovista has hired 500 new drivers. Despite these measures, some issues persist, such as a lack of passenger information and signage on the buses, which adds to the confusion for commuters.

Many commuters in the regions are facing disruptions due to the renovation, with many trains canceled or running on partial routes. The rail replacement service, while necessary, is proving to be a challenging alternative for passengers during this period of modernization.
