In a thrilling turn of events at the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund, Ritchie Edhouse, aged 41, clinched the 2024 Darts European Championship (EM) title. The tournament, which was played in the Best of 21 legs format, saw Edhouse defeat Jermaine Wattimena, aged 36, in the final with a score of 11:3.

Edhouse's journey to the title was not easy. He faced strong opponents throughout the tournament, including Gian van Veen, Michael Smith, Gary Anderson, and fellow finalist Wattimena. His impressive performances saw him climb ten places up the PDC Order of Merit, securing a ranking of 29.

The quarterfinals saw a significant upset as Jermaine Wattimena defeated the defending Darts World Champion, Luke Humphries, with a score of 10:4. Wattimena's victory set the stage for an exciting final against Edhouse.

Edhouse's victory also secured him a spot in the Grand Slam of Darts, to be held in November. This is a significant milestone for Edhouse, as it marks his first title win broadcast on television.

The tournament was not without its controversies. Michael van Gerwen, a multiple-time champion, criticized the conditions in the Westfalenhalle after his elimination from the European Championship. He believed the doors were open while he was playing, which he felt disrupted his rhythm.

The first round of the tournament saw several notable eliminations. Gerwyn Price, Peter Wright, and Luke Littler were among those who failed to make it through. Luke Littler, the favourite according to bookmakers, was particularly surprising.

Gabriel Clemens, aged 41, and Michael Schindler, aged 28, also found themselves eliminated in the first round. It's worth noting that Schindler is not related to Martin Schindler, another player in the tournament.

The unusual format of the tournament, which was not played in sets, also caused disruption for the players. This was an unusual change for the players, and it affected their rhythm of play.

Looking ahead, the players who will participate in the next Darts World Championship in December 2025 are not yet fully listed. However, the winner of the Super League Darts 2025, held in November 2025 in Hildesheim, will receive a spot in the 2026 Darts World Championship. This indicates that qualification tournaments are ongoing, and the final participants are not yet determined.

The next PDC tournament will be the PDC Players Championship, starting on October 30. The preliminary round will be held in Leicester, UK. As the dust settles on the 2024 Darts European Championship, players will be gearing up for the next challenge, eager to replicate Edhouse's success.
