Eight and ten-year-old kids meet tragic ends in Minneapolis school gunfire disaster

In a shocking turn of events, a 15-year-old student at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis became the perpetrator of a devastating school shooting on Wednesday, September 1. This tragic incident marks the first school shooting since March 4, 2024, that has resulted in a fatality.

The shooter, armed with a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol, all of which were legally purchased, opened fire during a church service marking the start of the new school year. The shooting left two children dead and 17 people (14 children and 3 adults) injured. The 8-year-old who lost their life is the youngest victim killed in a shooting on school grounds since 2021.

The shooter, tragically, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Prior to the shooting, there had been 7 school shootings this year that resulted in injuries or deaths. Last year, there were 39 such incidents.

The shooting is currently being investigated by the FBI, who are treating it as an act of domestic terrorism and a hate crime targeting Catholics. The shooter had previously filed a court document to change her first name to reflect her identification as female.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara stated that each of the 17 victims is expected to survive. The community was addressed by Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey in a press conference following the shooting, where he expressed his emotions, stating, "Don't just say this is about thoughts and prayers right now. These kids were literally praying."

Annunciation Catholic School Principal Matt DeBoer praised the heroic actions of the school's teachers during the shooting. The school, which enrolls students from preschool through 8th grade, is located on the same campus as Annunciation Catholic Church, where the shooting took place.

The first day of classes at Annunciation Catholic School was on Monday. Since 2018, there have been 229 school shootings. This grim statistic serves as a stark reminder of the need for continued efforts to address gun violence and ensure the safety of our children.
