Elderly competition: 96-year-old Donald secures spot as oldest participant in Countdown game show
In a remarkable turn of events, 96-year-old Donald Elsom from Willingham, Cambridgeshire, has made history as the oldest contestant to appear on the iconic daytime quiz show, Countdown. The show, produced by Lifted Entertainment, part of ITV Studios, and currently hosted by Colin Murray, has been a staple on Channel 4 since its debut in 1982.
Donald Elsom, a retired Royal Air Force corporal with an eclectic career spanning roles as a police dog handler, butcher, and school site agent, has captured the hearts of viewers with his love for numbers and warm, witty personality. His first episode is set to air on August 11 at 2.10pm.
Beyond his achievements on Countdown, Donald has been recognised for his community service and dedication to his local Church of England congregation. In April, he received Maundy Money from the King in a ceremony that honours individuals for their service to the Church and community.
Despite leaving school at the age of 14, Donald found his quiet talent for working with figures. Initially, terms like "decimals" and "algebra" were intimidating, but he overcame these challenges with determination. His love for numbers is evident in his fundraising efforts, as he raised more than £5,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support in 2023 by completing 95 laps of a local school sports field.
The daytime words and numbers quiz sees two contestants compete in 15 rounds to become the daily Countdown champion. With more than 90 seasons under its belt, Countdown has become a beloved institution in British television. Donald, a long-time viewer of the show, expressed his joy and excitement at being a part of it, considering his appearance a memorable event that he will remember for the rest of his life.
In addition to his framed photo of his Countdown appearance, Donald also has a photo of him with King Charles, which will be proudly displayed in his home. As the oldest contestant in Countdown history, Donald has certainly left a lasting impression on the show and its viewers. Tune in on August 11 to witness this remarkable achievement and cheer Donald on!
