Elderly man expresses concern over his geese
In the picturesque town of Marienhafe, a dispute has arisen over the continued operation of a small animal farm run by 81-year-old Ludwig Smidt. The story has captured the hearts of people nationwide, with a petition signed by over 67,000 individuals in support of Ludwig Smidt keeping his animals.
At the heart of the matter is a neighbour's application to the district, expressing concerns about noise and smell emanating from Ludwig Smidt's property, and perceiving a potential health risk. The identity of the person who reported the case to the building control authority in Aurich remains undisclosed.
Ludwig Smidt, who has been keeping poultry for several decades, views his animals – geese, ducks, and chickens – as his "life". He hopes to continue caring for them, expressing concern about the impact on his health should he be forced to part with them. The supporters of Ludwig Smidt refer to his property as a "little agricultural oasis", enriching the local community.
Around 50 direct neighbours have reportedly stated in writing that they do not feel disturbed by the animals, but rather consider them an enrichment. However, more residents have joined the complaint, according to a district spokesman.
The district is examining the case, with the goal of finding a mutually agreeable solution. The building supervisor at the Aurich district office is currently reviewing the case, and plans to discuss the issue with both Ludwig Smidt and the neighbours involved.
The residents of Marienhafe, known for their high protection claim, are divided on the issue. While some support Ludwig Smidt, others have joined the complaint. The petition, recently handed over to the district office by Ludwig Smidt and five supporters, serves as a testament to the widespread support for the elderly farmer.
As the district continues its examination, the fate of Ludwig Smidt's animals hangs in the balance. The community waits with bated breath, hoping for a resolution that respects the rights of all parties involved.
