Centenarian Kokichi Akuzawa Breaks Guinness World Record Summiting Mount Fuji

In a remarkable feat of determination and resilience, 106-year-old Kokichi Akuzawa has broken the Guinness World Record by summiting Mount Fuji at the age of 106.

The retired engineer, who worked until the age of 85 and still volunteers at a senior care centre and teaches painting at his home studio, embarked on this challenging journey accompanied by his 70-year-old daughter, Motoe Hoshino, and other family members.

Akuzawa's climbing party consisted of himself, Motoe Hoshino, his granddaughter, her husband, four friends from a local mountain club, and Motoe Hoshino. The party camped for two nights before beginning the climb.

Akuzawa spent six months preparing for the climb, including daily 5-hour walks and weekly climbs of smaller peaks. However, the ascent of Mount Fuji proved to be his most challenging yet. At one point, he almost gave up, but the encouragement of his family and fellow climbers helped him persevere.

At the peak of Mount Fuji, Akuzawa was photographed with a wide grin, holding the Guinness World Records certificate and a banner that read: "Congratulations on climbing Mount Fuji!" He expressed pride in himself and was impressed with his performance, urging others to "climb while they still can".

Akuzawa is hard of hearing and needed his daughter to shout reporters' questions into his ear. Despite his age, he is more reliant on others for climbing, but he values the social aspect of climbing and finds it easy to make friends on the mountain.

Akuzawa's house is decorated with framed paintings of his family and the mountains he has climbed. His daughter wants him to paint a scene of Mount Fuji at sunrise, and Akuzawa hopes to paint scenes from the summit to add to his collection.

It is worth noting that the Guinness World Record holder who climbed Mount Fuji at the age of 110 in August is not specified in the provided search results. However, Akuzawa's ascent of Mount Fuji at the age of 106 was harder than any previous climb, and he felt weaker than before.

Kokichi Akuzawa took up climbing at the age of 14 and has a passion for the sport. His climbing of Mount Fuji at the age of 3,776 meters marks a significant milestone in his life and serves as an inspiration to many.
