Elected into Parliament by Ukraine: Previously Imprisoned Military Pilot
Ukrainian Pilot Nadiya Savchenko Makes Dramatic Parliamentary Debut
Nadiya Savchenko, a symbol of resistance against Russia, made her first appearance in Ukraine's parliament on Tuesday after being released in a prisoner swap with Russia. The Ukrainian pilot, who has become a symbol of defiance against pro-Kremlin separatists, was draped in the Ukrainian flag and held a flag of Crimea during her parliamentary appearance.
Savchenko, a member of Yulia Tymoshenko's populist party, was elected to Ukraine's parliament in absentia during her detention. In her opening address, she criticized some members of parliament for their links to powerful business interests. Other lawmakers stood and applauded as she approached the podium, with Parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy praising her as an "irreplaceable symbol of Ukraine".
Some analysts suggest that Savchenko could become a challenge for President Petro Poroshenko due to her political ambitions and high esteem among soldiers still fighting in Ukraine's war. This comes as prominent leaders of the Euromaidan Revolution have expressed disenchantment with President Poroshenko's inability to eliminate cronyism and back-room dealings from Ukrainian politics.
Savchenko has expressed interest in running for president in the future. She has become a symbol of resistance to Russia due to her actions in joining a volunteer battalion fighting pro-Kremlin separatists and her subsequent imprisonment. During her detention, she staged a series of prolonged hunger strikes. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov dismissed her hunger strikes as a staged act.
The Euromaidan Revolution of February 2014 toppled an unpopular Moscow-backed leadership and led to stronger ties with the West. However, Crimea was annexed by Russia in March 2014, a move that Savchenko referenced in her speech. She has implied a leading role in the fight against corruption in Ukraine, which was a driving force behind the 2014 pro-EU revolt.
In one of her first acts as a deputy, Savchenko removed a banner bearing her name and picture from the parliament's rostrum. She warned of the possibility of another popular revolt if parliament betrays the people of Ukraine. Savchenko, with her fierce determination and unwavering commitment to Ukraine, is sure to be a force to be reckoned with in the country's political landscape.
