Electric Hyundai Ioniq passenger vehicles with electric powertrains have begun to arrive in Australian markets, arriving just as the model goes out of production.
The Hyundai Ioniq, a pioneer in the hybrid vehicle market that first debuted in 2016, is no longer available for sale in dealerships. Since its introduction, the Ioniq has been a competitor to the Toyota Prius, offering a range of hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric liftback models.
In May, Hyundai announced the discontinuation of the Ioniq Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid, and Electric liftbacks. Since then, a total of 396 original Ioniqs have been sold, with the Ioniq Electric Elite being one of the most affordable pure battery-electric cars in Australia, comparable to the MG ZS EV, BYD Atto 3, and Nissan Leaf.
The Ioniq received a facelift in 2019, but the most significant development is the Ioniq name now living on with a dedicated EV line-up based on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). The electric range of Hyundai now includes the Santa Fe Hybrid, Kona Electric, and the Ioniq 5.
The Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and Ioniq 7 are upcoming models in this line-up. The last units of the Ioniq 5 will be developed and produced at Hyundai's main sites, primarily in Ulsan, South Korea, with potential final assembly and adaptation taking place in European plants like Germany or the Czech Republic, depending on regional market demand.
The outgoing Ioniq Hybrid Premium started at $41,390 before on-road costs, the Ioniq Plug-in Premium at $47,950, and the Ioniq Electric Elite at $49,970. The remaining Ioniq units are going to existing customer orders, with the last batch arriving in Australia for final customers.
Few dealer demonstrators of the Ioniq are listed on the classifieds, marking the end of an era for this innovative hybrid vehicle. The Ioniq, initially a competitor to the Toyota Prius, has paved the way for Hyundai's future electric line-up, ensuring the brand's commitment to sustainable mobility.
