Electric Mercedes-AMG Formula One team's transportation switch from fuel-powered vehicles to an electric truck for their journey from the UK to the Dutch Grand Prix.
Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team Embraces Electric Fleet for European Races
The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team has taken a significant step towards a greener future, becoming the first team on the Formula 1 grid to use a battery electric truck for transportation during a European race weekend. The team used the Mercedes-Benz Trucks eActros 600 to transport its cars to the Dutch Grand Prix at the Zandvoort race track, a journey of approximately 418 miles from their base in Brackley.
The eActros 600, fitted with three Lithium Ion Phosphate battery packs, boasts a combined capacity of 600kWh and a minimum range of 311 miles when fully charged. The truck is equipped with rapid-charging technology as standard, allowing it to replenish its batteries from 20 to 80 percent in just 25 minutes. This rapid charging capability is crucial for long-haul journeys, as demonstrated by the team's use of the eActros 600 to transport their W16 cars from Brackley to Zandvoort.
Ash Armstrong, eConsultancy Manager at Daimler Truck UK, expressed that this partnership is key in demonstrating that sustainable, long-haul distribution has arrived with the eActros 600. Armstrong further stated that the era of electrification is upon us and range anxiety is no longer an issue.
This move by the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team is part of their ambitious plans to reach Net Zero by 2030. By using an electric fleet across all European races, the team is pushing the boundaries of logistics in the Formula 1 industry and setting an example for other teams and industries to follow.
The use of the eActros 600 truck to transport the team's race cars is not only environmentally friendly but also a testament to the impressive range and capability of this truck. By reducing CO2e emissions by 80 percent against a diesel-powered equivalent, when measured across a full vehicle lifecycle, the eActros 600 is a significant step towards a more sustainable future for transportation.
