Electric Truck Makes Historic Border Crossing from U.S. to Mexico
In a groundbreaking move towards a net-zero future, a Class 8 heavy-duty electric freight truck has made its maiden voyage from the United States into Mexico. This significant milestone was made possible through the collaboration of fleet operators, energy providers, and local governments.
The transition to zero-emission trucks on both sides of the border requires a necessary infrastructure, as stated by California Energy Commissioner Patty Monahan. One such example of this infrastructure is the charging infrastructure installed by San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E).
This charging infrastructure is a part of SDG&E's Power Your Drive for Fleets program, designed to connect fleet operators with resources and financial incentives to easily and cost-effectively design and install charging infrastructure for medium- and heavy-duty fleets. The chargers were partially funded by a $200,000 grant through the California Energy Commission’s Clean Transportation Program.
Juan Baez, owner of the San Diego-based Bali Express, expressed excitement about leading the way towards a more sustainable future for freight transportation on both sides of the border. Baez's company was one of the first to utilize the charging infrastructure installed by SDG&E.
Caroline Winn, Chief Executive Officer at SDG&E, stated that the new electric corridor is a great example of collaboration and innovation towards electrification. SDG&E's Chairman, Nora Vargas, who is also the Supervisor for border communities, is proud and excited that they are moving towards a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous future.
Vargas emphasized the importance of reducing emissions in border communities while also growing the economy. She mentioned that the new electric corridor is a great example of the kind of public-private partnerships that can improve air quality and promote economic prosperity for the binational region.
The California Energy Commission has provided over $1 billion to alternative fuel and vehicle technology projects, including the Power Your Drive for Fleets program. This investment is a testament to the state's commitment to a cleaner, greener future.
While the company that has installed electric charging stations for heavy electric trucks at the US-Mexico border is not identified in the available search results, the collaboration between SDG&E, fleet operators, and the California Energy Commission is a clear demonstration of the progress being made towards a more sustainable future for freight transportation.
As more electric freight trucks make their way across the border, the electric corridor installed by SDG&E will play a crucial role in facilitating this transition. The dedication of these trucks is a significant milestone as the binational region moves towards a net-zero future.
