Electronic arts initiate with a hymn in sign language at Ars Electronica
The city of Linz, Austria, will once again play host to the Ars Electronica Festival, taking place from the 3rd to the 7th of September. This year's event promises a diverse and engaging programme, with free admission for all.
The festival will kick off on Wednesday evening with a free Pre-Opening Walk, offering attendees a first glimpse into the festival's offerings. The walk will take visitors through the PostCity at the train station, as well as the Upper Austrian Art Society, Francisco Carolinum, Lentos Art Museum Linz, University of Art and Design Linz, Salzamt Atelierhaus, Ars Electronica Center, and Stadtwerkstatt. During the walk, curators will tease their exhibitions and programs, giving attendees a taste of what's to come.
On Wednesday evening, the festival will officially open with a performance of "Ode to Joy" at 7:30 PM. This unique performance will feature hearing-impaired musicians, a sign language choir, and a music ensemble. The European anthem in sign language will open the festival, setting a tone of inclusivity and celebration.
The performance is a celebration of Austria's 30th anniversary of EU membership. On the same day, at 7:30 AM, the festival opened with a performance of "Ode to Joy" that included the participation of an international ensemble, although specific names of additional artists and groups performing alongside them are not detailed in the available sources.
Throughout the festival, visitors can expect a variety of performances and installations. At the Ars Electronica Center's Deep Space, pianist Maki Namekawa and media artist Cori O'Lan will perform a mix of music by Philip Glass and visualizations for their "Pianographique".
The project Organism by Navid Navab and Garnet Willis, winners of the Golden Nica in the category Digital Musics & Sound Art, will be experienced in the Mariendom. Excerpts from the Walzersymphonie project will be presented by the Bruckner Orchestra Linz under the direction of Ingmar Beck.
A highlight of the festival will be the Motus Percussion ensemble's presentation of samples from the Linzer Klangwolke "Urban Pulse" around 9 PM.
The Ars Electronica Festival is Austria's largest and most significant festival for art, technology, and society. The APA - Austria Presse Agentur eG, the largest national news and press agency in Austria, will undoubtedly provide extensive coverage of the event.
For those who want to experience the festival before it officially begins, a Pre-Opening Walk will take place on Tuesday afternoon and evening. The times for the Pre-Opening Walk are 3:30 PM, 4 PM, 5:30 PM, 7 PM, 8:15 PM, 9 PM, and 11 PM respectively.
