Emergency: Fire within Refuse Collection Vehicle - Specialized Equipment Deployed - Extensive Use Required
In the heart of Recklinghausen-South, an unexpected incident unfolded on the street "Im Reitwinkel" at 14:50 on July 30, 2025. A fire broke out inside a waste collection vehicle, prompting a swift response from local emergency services.
The Recklinghausen fire department mobilised a swap loader vehicle equipped with a crane, while the fire department from Gladbeck deployed a special cutting extinguishing system, although it remained unused in this instance. Simultaneously, the incident command service, the voluntary South unit, the rescue service with an RTW, and the fire department from Gladbeck with two vehicles were dispatched to the scene. To ensure continuous coverage, the voluntary fire-fighting unit Hochlar staffed the vacant fire and rescue station on Kurt-Schumacher-Allee.
Upon arrival, firefighters found that the waste container on the hydraulic arm, which was in the process of being emptied at the time of the fire, posed an additional hazard. Using the crane grab, the rear door of the waste vehicle was forcibly opened, secured, and the load manually removed. However, opening and automatically emptying the vehicle for effective extinguishing was no longer possible.
Initially, the fire department cooled the vehicle and subsequently extinguished it from above the load using foam via a turntable ladder. The incident commander explored various options for emptying the vehicle to reach deeper-lying hotspots within the load, but these efforts were unsuccessful.
The fire in the waste collection vehicle involved mixed waste, and it took the firefighters until 20:45 to bring the blaze under control. The operation to extinguish the fire and manage the waste was a collaborative effort, with the disposal company providing personnel and equipment such as containers, a wheel loader, and a mini excavator.
The police are currently investigating the cause and extent of the damage from the fire in the waste collection vehicle.
