Fire in Hamburg-Veddel Continues, Investigation Underway

A fire that broke out in a warehouse on Müggenburger Straße in Hamburg-Veddel on Monday, August 25, 2025, is still ongoing and is expected to continue into the next day. The incident, which caused multiple explosions and extensive damage, has been a major operation for the Fire Department and emergency services in Hamburg, with over 320 personnel deployed.

The fire was first reported in the afternoon, and upon arrival, several pressure gas containers in the warehouse had already exploded. The intensity of the fire and the explosions forced the incident commander to retreat and halt direct firefighting.

The police are responsible for handling the investigation of the fire. Initial findings suggested that the pressure gas cylinders were laughing gas bottles, but other unknown gases could not be ruled out. A police spokeswoman has stated that the fire investigators will begin their work during the day, providing initial results earliest by the middle of the following week.

The nearby federal highway 1 was closed for several hours due to falling debris. Some vehicles passing by were hit, injuring one person. Three people were injured, one critically and one severely. However, extensive evacuation measures were carried out, and all evacuated individuals were uninjured. Eight of them were rescued by boat.

To ensure safety, the fire department sent several measuring vehicles to survey the area around the incident. The Technical Relief Agency (THW) is supporting the firefighting efforts with a Virtual Operations Support Team (VOST) and multiple deployment forces to ensure power supply at the incident site.

A partial demolition of the affected building is planned using THW loaders and excavators to facilitate targeted firefighting measures. In the adjacent container yard, pressure gas containers continued to explode sporadically, causing numerous other fires in nearby industrial areas, adjacent buildings, and open spaces. Debris thrown by the explosions also damaged several fire department vehicles.
