Emergency response triggered by iPhone's crash detection saves the lives of teenagers

In an incident that occurred late one August night near Kürten, North Rhine-Westphalia, a 16-year-old driver named Lindsay Leskovac was involved in a tragic accident. According to reports by TV station WFMJ, Lindsay was reportedly asleep at the wheel during the crash.

The make and model of the vehicle involved in the accident were not disclosed in the provided sources. However, it was revealed that the crash detection feature on an iPhone played a crucial role in Lindsay's rescue.

Lindsay, who sustained several fractures, including fractures to both legs and the cervical spine, was unconscious at the time of the crash. Fortunately, the crash detection feature on her iPhone, available on all iPhones from the iPhone 14 model and newer, was activated automatically.

The feature, which can be enabled on certain Apple devices, recognised the impact and automatically called emergency services. The crash location was the scene of an emergency dispatch, and the iPhone's crash detection feature dispatched a rescue team to the scene of the crash.

This life-saving feature, which is also available on the Apple Watch Series 8 or newer, Apple Watch SE 2, and Apple Watch Ultra, has proven to be a valuable safety feature in emergency situations. Numerous people have been rescued by the fall detection feature on their iPhone or Apple Watch in recent years.

Lindsay's mother was informed that the iPhone's crash detection feature placed an emergency call, but no information was provided about her current condition or status. The accident was a tragic event, with four other youths, including a 16-year-old girl from Bergisch-Gladbach, losing their lives.

The activation of the crash detection feature demonstrates its potential to save lives in emergency situations. As technology continues to evolve, it's clear that features like this one will play an increasingly important role in keeping us safe on the roads.
