On June 10, 2025, the FF Oberglaim fire department became the latest addition to the "Defi-Bridge through the Fire Department" project. This initiative, designed to improve emergency response times and patient outcomes, is a collaborative effort between fire departments and medical professionals.

Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the most common causes of death in Germany and Europe. In light of this, the project aims to bridge the time until the arrival of the rescue service, increasing the chances of survival for patients in sudden cardiac arrest.

Fire departments in several towns, including Adlkofen, Tiefenbach, Pörndorf, Wörth, Bodenkirchen, Furth, Essenbach, Jesendorf, Bruckberg, Gundlkofen, Baierbach, Attenhausen, Stollnried, Aham, Ergolding, Geisenhausen, Vilsheim, and Piflas, have already participated in the "Defi-Bridge" project.

The project was initiated because firefighters usually arrive at the scene a few minutes before the paramedics and doctor. Simultaneously, local fire departments provide initial care to the patient with CPR and application of the defibrillator. The firefighters of FF Oberglaim have been trained as first responders in cases of cardiac arrest and Defi-Bridge. Their training included the safe use of defibrillators and CPR.

Jürgen König, the Medical Director of the Rescue Service, demonstrated how to handle the defibrillator during the training. The goal of the training is to provide quick, valuable assistance in emergencies in the community.

The few moments that firefighters can arrive before paramedics and doctors can mean the difference between life and death for a patient in a sudden cardiac arrest. Every minute without effective resuscitation during a sudden cardiac arrest decreases the chances of survival by about 10%.

As more fire departments want to follow the example set by those already participating in the "Defi-Bridge" project, the initiative continues to expand. The timely arrival of fire departments can make a significant difference in the survival chances of a patient in a sudden cardiac arrest.

However, there is no available information about the next fire department to join the "Defi-Bridge through the Fire Department" project. Nevertheless, the project's potential to save lives makes it an indispensable part of a modern rescue system.

In conclusion, the "Defi-Bridge" project is a significant step forward in improving emergency response times and patient outcomes. It underscores the fire department's role beyond fire-fighting, serving as a vital component of a comprehensive emergency response system.
